Start with low to moderate drive. You want harmonic density and slight peak softening, not audible distortion. If the master gets smaller, duller, or fuzzy, reduce drive before changing anything else. For drums or creative stems you can push harder, but full masters usually need restraint.
Which tape speed is best?
Use 30 IPS for clean, modern masters that need tight low end and clearer highs. Use 15 IPS when the mix needs weight or a more obvious analog footprint. If you are unsure, compare both and choose the one that improves translation rather than the one that feels bigger for two seconds.
How much compression should you use?
Use light tape compression for mastering. The goal is cohesion, not pumping. If the chorus loses punch or the kick stops moving the track, the compression is too strong. Tape compression is most useful when it makes the mix feel like one performance.
