Wow and flutter is a tape term people repeat without quite defining. It is simple, and it is a big part of why analog recordings feel alive.

What is wow and flutter?

Wow and flutter are small variations in the speed of analog tape as it moves across the heads. Those speed changes become tiny fluctuations in pitch and timing. Wow is the slow variation (under ~4 Hz); flutter is the faster one. Together they add organic movement that digital playback, at a locked sample rate, never has on its own.

What causes it?

Mechanics: motor irregularities, tape tension changes, and imperfections in the rollers and capstan. No transport stays perfectly constant, so the pitch drifts by tiny amounts — usually too small to name, but enough to feel.

What does wow and flutter sound like?

At realistic levels it is almost subconscious: a sense of life, a slight chorusing on sustained notes, a recording that breathes. Push it and it becomes an obvious effect — the warbling pitch of old cassettes and deliberate lo-fi.

A little is texture you feel. A lot is a creative effect you hear.

How to use it musically

• Subtle — a touch across a mix or stem so digital sources feel less static.
